How Much Should a Plumber Spend on Google Ads?

How much should a plumber spend on Google Ads? I'm going to give you a real answer with real numbers — not the 'it depends' cop-out you've probably heard before.

I'm Kelsey with KaeRae Marketing. I've managed Google Ads for plumbers for almost 10 years now. Here's how I actually figure out budget — and what you can expect.

Here's the short answer: most plumbers I work with spend between $1,500 and $5,000 a month on Google Ads. That's not including management fees — that's just ad spend.

But that range is huge, right? So let me explain how you actually figure out the right number for YOUR business.

Here's the formula:

Figure out how much you're willing to pay for a new customer. Let's say you're a plumber and your average job is worth $500. You'd probably be willing to pay $50 to $100 to get that job.

Now, not everyone who clicks your ad becomes a customer. Let's say 10% of your clicks turn into paying jobs. That means you need 10 clicks to get 1 customer.

If you're paying $15 per click — which is pretty normal for plumbing keywords — that's $150 to get one customer.

So if you want 20 new customers a month, that's $3,000 in ad spend. Simple math.

A few things will change this number:

Your location — plumbers in big cities pay more per click than plumbers in small towns. Competition drives prices up.

Your services — emergency services convert better but cost more. Drain cleaning might be cheaper but lower ticket.

Your website — if your site is slow or confusing, fewer clicks turn into calls, which means you pay more per customer.

And your competition — if there are 10 plumbers bidding on the same keywords in your area, prices go up.

If you're just starting out, I'd recommend $1,500 to $2,000 a month minimum. That gives you enough data to see what's working without blowing through cash too fast.

If you're established and you want to grow aggressively, $3,000 to $5,000 will get you there.

And whatever you do — don't set a budget of $500 a month and expect miracles. That's not enough to get consistent data, and you'll probably conclude that 'Google Ads doesn't work' when really, you just didn't give it enough fuel.

So — how much should a plumber spend on Google Ads?

$1,500 to $5,000 a month depending on your goals, your location, and your competition. Start with $1,500 to $2,000 if you're testing the waters.
