SEO vs Google Ads: Which Is Better for Home Services?

SEO or Google Ads — which one should you do? I get asked this question at least once a week, and the answer isn't what most people expect.
I'm Kelsey with KaeRae Marketing. I've been doing both SEO and Google Ads for home service businesses since 2015.
Here's the truth: the right answer depends on where your business is right now and what you're trying to accomplish. Let me break down both so you can decide.
Google Ads is paid advertising. You pay to show up at the top of Google search results — the ones with the little 'Sponsored' tag. Every time someone clicks, you pay.
The advantage? Speed. You can turn on a campaign today and start getting calls this week. It's predictable — if you spend X, you can expect to get approximately Y leads.
The downside? It's not free. The moment you stop paying, you disappear.
SEO — search engine optimization — is about getting your website to show up in the organic results. Those are the ones below the ads.
The advantage? You don't pay per click. If you rank well, you can get leads for free, forever.
The downside? It takes time. We're talking 3 to 6 months minimum before you see real traction. And it's competitive — if your competitors have been doing SEO for years, you're playing catch-up.
Here's what I tell my clients:
If you need leads NOW — like, you're slow right now and you need the phone to ring — do Google Ads. You can get results in days.
If you're thinking long-term and you have some patience, SEO builds equity. Once you rank, those leads cost you nothing.
But honestly? The best strategy is both.
Google Ads gives you immediate leads while SEO is building in the background. Once your SEO kicks in, you can dial back your ad spend — or keep it running and dominate both paid and organic.
The businesses that win aren't choosing one or the other. They're doing both at the same time.
Here's what I see all the time:
Business owner says 'SEO didn't work' — but they only gave it two months.
Or they say 'Google Ads is a waste' — but their campaign was set up wrong and they were paying for garbage clicks.
Neither strategy is magic. Both require doing them correctly and giving them enough time. SEO needs 6+ months. Google Ads needs proper setup and ongoing optimization.
If someone told you that you'd see results in 30 days from SEO, they lied to you.
So — SEO or Google Ads?
Need leads now? Google Ads. Building for the long-term? SEO. Want to win? Both.
Just know that either one takes real work to do right.
